White Coat Ceremony
The White Coat is symbolic of professionalism and integrity within the profession of pharmacy. The ceremonial donning of the White Coat represents an integral component in the transition from student to pharmacist practitioner. Inherent in this transition is the professional obligation and responsibility to uphold the highest ethical standards and practice of altruism in providing pharmacy care.
Pledge of Professionalism
The profession of pharmacy demands commitment and adherence to the highest ideals and ethical standards. This commitment is essential to ensure the highest level of pharmacy care services are available to all patients.
As a student of pharmacy, I have acknowledged that acceptance of this responsibility does not commence with graduation, but began when I entered the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy and the professional pharmacy community. Therefore, I will continue to strive to uphold these standards as I advance toward full membership in the profession of pharmacy. I acknowledge that my education has prepared, and will continue to prepare me for the privilege, not the right, to enter into the pharmacy profession.
In this regard, I pledge to:
Commit myself during my tenure as a pharmacy student and Doctor of Pharmacy degree candidate to embrace, with respect to my personal and professional development, the highest standards of ethical and academic conduct and professional behavior.
Support my colleagues by actively encouraging personal commitment to the Oath of Maimonides (my-MON-eh-deez) and the Code of Ethics as set forth by the profession.
Incorporate into my life and practice, dedication to excellence. This will require an ongoing reassessment of personal and professional values.
Foster professional competency through life-long learning. I must strive for high ideals, teamwork and unity within the profession in order to provide optimal patient care.
Maintain the highest ideals and professional attributes to ensure and facilitate the covenantal (cuv-uh-NEN-tull) relationship required of the pharmacy caregiver.
Develop a sense of loyalty and duty to the profession of pharmacy by being a builder of community, one able and willing to contribute to the well-being of others and one who enthusiastically accepts the responsibility and accountability for membership in the profession.
