Pharmacy team takes 3rd in clinical skills competition

KU School of Pharmacy students Emily Schaefer and Leah Nelson won 3rd place in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists National Clinical Skills Competition at the ASHP Midyear meeting in Las Vegas Dec. 4. Schaefer is a fourth-year student from the Lawrence campus and Nelson is a third-year student at the Wichita campus. The pair competed against 138 other teams from schools of pharmacy across the country. The National Clinical Skills Competition challenges student pharmacists to analyze and make treatment recommendations for complex patient case scenarios that represent situations the participants may encounter when they practice as pharmacists. Case topics run the gamut of pharmacotherapy, often focusing on a core topic such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and anticoagulation, with several ancillary problems exploring the depth of the student’s acumen. Cases are often based on a real patient case or the cumulative clinical experiences of the case writer.
