Pharmacists' Patient Care Process (PPCP):

Course Relevance to the Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process (PPCP):A circle including the PPCP process

Pharmacists are essential members of the healthcare team, providing high quality, cost-effective, and accessible healthcare. As the profession evolves and expands to clinically oriented patient care services, a consistent process of the provision of care is needed. The PPCP provides a framework for pharmacists to deliver and document patient care. More information can be found here: https://jcpp.net/patient-care-process/

Pharmaceutical Science Courses:

This course will provide foundational material required for you to apply the PPCP to patient care in subsequent coursework and practice. When appropriate, faculty will highlight the connection between science and practice using this process.

Social and Administrative Science Courses:

This course will address the components of the PPCP as they apply to the course content and will occasionally apply the process to specific patient examples/scenarios.

Pharmacotherapy Courses:

This course/lab series is directly tied to developing your knowledge of disease states to facilitate your provision of direct patient care, therefore the use of the PPCP is deeply rooted within the context of this course. Throughout this course, you will systematically be applying your knowledge in the following areas of the PPCP: Collect, Assess, Plan, Implement, Communicate, and Document.

The PPCP with be modeled for you by faculty and instructors throughout each disease state lecture and case recitation session. In this course, you will gain understanding of the respective disease states to aid in your ability to identify the key information that you would COLLECT. Additionally, the disease state knowledge that you gain in this course will allow you to ASSESS, PLAN, and IMPLEMENT your pharmaceutical care plan. Finally, through the case recitations, you will have the opportunity to apply these concepts using the student Electronic Health Record (s-EHR) and case presentation to COMMUNICATE and DOCUMENT your pharmaceutical care plan.

Pharmacy Skills Lab Course Sequence:

The Pharmacy Skills Lab sequence is directly tied to applying your knowledge of disease states and developing skills to facilitate your provision of direct patient care. Therefore, the use of the PPCP is deeply rooted within the context of this course sequence. Throughout the course sequence, you will systematically be applying your knowledge in the following areas of the PPCP: Collect, Assess, Plan, Implement, Follow-up, Collaborate, Communicate, and Document.

School of Pharmacy Policies

PharmD Handbook: All School of Pharmacy policies and procedures outlined in this syllabus are consistent with University of Kansas policies and procedures. At times, School of Pharmacy policies and procedures may be more stringent than University. You may refer to the PharmD student handbook ([http://policy.ku.edu/pharmacy/studenthandbook]) for the following policies: 1) Filming, recording, and commercial note taking; 2) Inclement weather procedures; 3) Concealed carry of firearms; 4) Religious conflicts.

Professionalism: You have chosen a professional career that requires you to act in an honest and responsible manner, and to assume significant responsibility for the health and well-being of others. Therefore, it is expected that you will always act as a professional. Students are to be respectful and address instructors in a respectful manner in all personal and electronic communications. Cell phones are not to be used during class and extramural conversations which interfere with the learning of fellow students will result in a request to leave the class. Students who exhibit unprofessional or inappropriate behavior will be asked to leave and will not be allowed to return without written permission from the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Individuals who disrupt or obstruct teaching may be subject to discipline for either academic misconduct or non-academic misconduct against the orderly process of the University. Professional behavior is also imperative when reviewing exam/quiz questions or receiving feedback. Collegial discussion is appropriate to further promote the learning process; however, a disrespectful and argumentative tone from students qualifies as unprofessional behavior.

Dress Code (if applicable): The School of Pharmacy recommends that students always adhere to a business casual dress code while in classes or school sanctioned activities. Dress code for labs will be specified in the course syllabus.

Misconduct, Cheating, Plagiarism: In addition to the School of Pharmacy Student Honor Code (see student handbook), students are also reminded of the KU School of Pharmacy and the University of Kansas policies regarding academic misconduct. Dishonest behavior of any kind will not be tolerated. If the instructor finds any case of plagiarism, including improperly or failing to cite the work of another, or discovers an incident of cheating, the student(s) involved will fail the assignment and the course. The use of previous years’ exams, quizzes, or activities is considered cheating in the student code of conduct. Enabling another student to commit an act of academic misconduct is also considered academic misconduct. During exams, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure that his/her actions do not raise suspicion and that test answers are protected from the view of nearby students. Plagiarism is academic misconduct. Please refer to the KU School of Pharmacy Student Handbook for policies and procedures associated with academic dishonesty.

Filming, Recording, Commercial Note Taking: Course materials prepared by the instructor, together with the content of all lectures and review sessions presented by the instructor are the property of the instructor. On request, the instructor will usually grant permission for students to audiotape lectures, on the condition that these audio tapes are used as a study aid by the individual making the recording. Unless explicit permission is obtained from the instructor, recordings of lectures and review sessions may not be modified and must not be transferred or transmitted to any other person, whether or not that individual is enrolled in the course.
