Dr. Grauer grew up in North Central Kansas in the community of Marysville. Dr. Grauer earned his B.S. in Pharmacy in 1989 from the University of Kansas. He received his M.S. in Hospital Pharmacy in 1991 from The Ohio State University and completed an ASHP accredited residency program in 1991 at The Ohio State University Medical Center. In 2000, he received his Ph.D. in Pharmacy from The Ohio State University. Dr. Grauer completed a two-year health economic fellowship in the Solid Organ Transplantation Division at The Ohio State University. He served as the Director of Outcomes Measurement and Research for Ohio State University Medical Center for 3 years. He returned to the University of Kansas in 2000 as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice. While at KU, he has served as the Graduate Program Director and has mentored more than 40 Master’s level students. Dr. Grauer has significant work experience in retail, hospital, mail-order and consulting pharmacy. Outside of work, Dr. Grauer spends a great deal of time with his family in sporting activities, music and home remodeling projects.

Teaching

I approach teaching with the idea to develop basic skills in a given topic and have students demonstrate the application of the learned skill. This approach has been fostered from the teaching philosophy that all students will learn if given the opportunity of education. I view my job as providing as many opportunities as possible in the courses I teach for students to learn. Learning is not education until the learning is applied to real problems. To accomplish the above I incorporate research and practical experience into each class. Lectures incorporate visual aids, application activities, extensive reading assignments and project assignments. Students get the instructors notes to free them up to learn and apply what they learn to problems (education). This style of teaching makes the lectures enjoyable for the instructor and students as students are expected to participate in every phase of the course including lecture. Active learning facilitates education.

For the professional Pharm.D. management and pharmacoeconomic courses, students are expected to grasp the basics of a broad list of topics. The courses have been developed not for managers but for practitioner managers. The underlying theme throughout the course is that to be an excellent practitioner, the student must be a good manager and decision maker. These are the only two courses in the professional Pharm.D. curriculum that focus on management and econmics. The goals are to provide all students with basic skills needed to manage ‘the business of providing pharmaceutical care’. The courses each require all students to complete two written projects. Pharmacy students need skills in research and writing to be successful leaders within the profession. Students are very creative when they are given the chance to be. Eighteen to twenty exercises are used in each course to give students an opportunity to solve problems via application of course material. A specific example includes the recruitment, hiring and training of a new pharmacist employee where students design a recruitment plan, interview candidates (fellow students) and develop a training plan for the new employee. Students in the courses are evaluated using traditional examination, oral and written presentations and in-class exercises.

Upon graduation, students will be presented with an ever changing health care environment in which they must be active life-long learners to avoid becoming obsolete. One of the basic abilities required for life long learning is the ability to judge medical research in the literature and presented at meetings. Each lecture incorporates published literature to demonstrate the topic being covered. Over the years, students have requested more examples be used for the topics in my courses. I have significantly changed the content of the courses based on feedback. The course is now heavily weighted towards practical application of skills.

For all graduate courses, my teaching philosophy is similar. However, the expectations of the students in these programs, is different. Students in these programs are expected to be highly motivated learners. I believe graduate education is the best when the student is challenged beyond their own current knowledge level. The student’s efforts in these courses will directly influence the education they get. I believe it is my job as an instructor to expand the boundaries of the advanced student’s knowledge and cultivate interest. Education in these students involves motivation of the student to explore topics outside of the realm of pharmacy practice and apply what is learned to pharmacy. In the advanced pharmacoeconomic graduate course an emphasis is placed upon practical methodological issues a decision maker needs to know for rational decisions making. The decisions covered in the course range from policy level decisions (such as drug formulary decisions) to individual patient decisions (such as individual patient treatment alternative decisions). The course may be described as a ‘how to’ course in economic evaluation techniques. Students are expected to produce quality economic evaluation projects and literature evaluations.

Thus, my teaching philosophy is based on the outcomes students’ are expected to get – be good managers and use proper techniques when making decisions. Pharmacists are all managers and the decisions they make can impact patient’s lives. I believe students must be solid in each to thrive in the current health care environment.

Service

I strive to be a solid citizen within the Department, School, University and pharmacy profession. I believe I accomplish this by serving in a wide variety capacity. It is a rare instance where I have ever said no to a service opportunity. I have served on state and national level committees. I have been appointed by the Provost and Dean to several committees. This activity is expected to continue. In addition, my service to students goes above and beyond in many cases. I am proud that students contact me after they graduate. I have assited in the purchase of many pharmacies, start up of new pharmacies, provided career advice and am always willing to listen. Service is an enjoyable activity and one I hope to maintain throughout my career.
